Description

Drawing by Linn Meyers, Untitled (ink and acrylic gouache on vintage graph paper, 10.5" x 8", 2023). The image illustrates a key longstanding body of work in Linn Meyers's career, during which she has consistently produced works on paper, often graph paper, that inspire and reflect her broader practice. This image represents her later "Graph Paper Drawings" series (2010–present), notebook-sized works that use the imposed grid of their material as a platform for experimentation. They shift between organization and disorder and oscillations between lines, voids and grid and often include numbers and hole punches in the original paper, suggesting numerical dimensions and limits to their imagined spaces. This work was publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications and acquired by major museums.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key body of work from throughout Linn Meyers's career: her drawing practice, which has centered on works on paper, as well as her more well-known wall drawings. In her early career, she often worked out ideas and compositional elements for large works in small pieces on graph paper, which later became a body of work in its own right. Her drawings take an intuitive approach combining flat areas of color and linear mark-making including lines of dots whose patterns have been compared to cosmological terrains, geometric landscapes and geological maps. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this body of work, which brought Meyers ongoing recognition through exhibitions and coverage by major critics and publications. Meyers's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Linn Meyers, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
