English: The Church of Suomenlinna was originally built as a Greek-Orthodox garrison church in 1854. At the time, the building had five towers with onion-shaped domes. The appearance of the church, which is a prominent feature of Helsinki’s view to the south, was changed soon after Finnish independence and it was converted into an Evangelical-Lutheran church. The present appearance of the church dates back to the 1920s. The church steeple still doubles as a lighthouse which guides both air traffic and ships.
The church of Suomenlinna is popular for weddings. The church seats 400 people and Suomenlinna is part of the Helsinki cathedral congregation.
