Summary

Description
English: Leistler Bookcase, 1850-51, shown at the Great Exhibition, London, 1851. Leistler's exhibits were described as "massive, bold and masculine in design, and well adapted to a palace". This bookcase, "a cathedral in wood", bears elaborate decoration that referred to current debates on the unification of the German-speaking peoples. It was presented to Queen Victoria by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and installed in Buckingham Palace. Made in Vienna, Austria. Designed by Bernardis di Bernardo; assisted by Joseph Kranner; made by Carl Leistler & Sohn; sculpted by Anton Dominik Feinkorn; carved by Franz Maler. Made out of oak. Museum no. W.12-1967. Given by the University of Edinburgh.
