L'édification de ce temple de style Hoysala date de 1269. C'est Somanatha, un des généraux du roi hoysala Narashimha III (1254-1291) qui en est le commanditaire initial. C'est l'un des plus beaux temples indiens de la période médiévale. L'état de conservation de la structure et des décors est remarquable.

Ce temple est composé de trois sanctuaires dédiés à Vishnou (Kesava, Venugopala, Janardhana), surmontés chacun d'un sikhara et reliés entre eux. Il est construit sur une plateforme en étoile et entouré d'une enceinte à galerie comprenant 64 chapelles secondaires.

Les murs extérieurs et intérieurs ainsi que les colonnes sont très richement décorés de reliefs sculptés. Les sculpteurs ont pour la plupart signé leurs oeuvres.
