L'entrée du palais Barberini

Le palais a été conçu en 1625 par Carlo Maderno, à la demande du Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, devenu Pape en 1623 sous le nom d'Urbain VIII.

La forme du bâtiment est celle d'une vaste villa avec deux ailes en H qui s'avancent dans des jardins. A la mort de l'architecte, Le Bernin reprend les travaux en collaboration avec Francesco Borromini. Les colonnes de la façade (Le Bernin) sont des trois ordres, dorique au rez-de-chaussée, ionien au premier étage, corinthien au deuxième étage, en pilastres. Le portique au rez-de-chaussée permet d'alléger l'allure du bâtiment.

Les salles du premier étage ont toutes des plafonds peints dont celui du salon principal, oeuvre exceptionnelle pour sa taille et sa composition de Pierre de Cortone (Le Triomphe de la Divine Providence).

Le palais accueille aujourd'hui la galerie nationale d'art ancien (Galleria nazionale d'arte antica) qui comprend des oeuvres très célèbres comme "La Fornarina" de Raphaël.
