La cour intérieure du Jehangir (Jahangiir) Mahal

Orchha a été la capitale des Rajas Bundela de 1501 à 1783. Bir Singh Deo, souverain d'Orchha fit construire en 1626 (?) le Jehangir Mahal en l'honneur de son allié le Prince moghol Salim (devenu l'empereur Moghol Jehangir en 1605).

Le Jehangir Mahal a été conçu comme une citadelle de forme carrée. Les dômes de la Jehangir Mahal, ont été construits selon les coutumes timourides. C'est l'un des plus beaux bâtiments de l'architecture moghole, il est dans un style composite associant des éléments architecturaux et décors indiens et islamiques.

Le palais d'Orchha est constitué de plusieurs bâtiments construits à des époques différentes : - le Raj Mahal construit pas le troisième rajâ Madhukar Shâh (1554 - 1578), qui fut défait par Akbar et exilé jusqu'à son décès en 1592. - le Rai Praveen Mahal associé à un jardin, - le Jehangir Mahal, chef d'oeuvre de l'architecture moghole

Jahângîr, de son vrai nom Salîm, Nûr ud-Din Muhammad - (né à Fatehpur-Sikrî, 1569 - mort à Lâhore, 1627) est le quatrième empereur moghol de l'Inde.
