Acquaintancewith teachers is not common. Close supervision of the stu-dents s work is not usual and ideals of life are not high. Butlittle opportunity is given for participation in the responsibil-ity of student organization. Living expenses are always high-er. A college of the size of Lawrence is the happy medium.It is the largest college in the state but not too large for per-sonal attention being given students. LAWRENCE COLLEGE BULLETIN 21 PRE-PROFESSIONAL COURSES COURSES of Study at Lawrence are arranged in generalculture and in pre-professional groups. The formerare intended to give a thorough general training whilethe latter are so arranged as to give a broad founda-tion for the study of such professions as law, medicine, jour-nalism, engineering, etc. It is now generally conceded that itis very unwise for a young man to pass at once from the highschool to the professional or technical school. Mr. Horwelltruly says: Specialization which is not based upon a liberalculture attempts to put an edge on pot iron. Students who take the pre-professional courses at Law-rence receive a general training which will make them broaderand more efficient men and at the same time receive a specialpreparation for study of a particular calling. They can alsousually shorten their professional course by at least one year.Thus those who take our pre-engineering course can completethe engineering work in a tech
