Photographic image by Laurie Simmons, Tourism: Parthenon (1984). The image illustrates a key body of work by artist Laurie Simmons beginning in the early 1980s when she produced staged monochromatic tableaux using Japanese dolls and rear-projected imagery of like-hued rooms or postcard slides of famed tourist sites, as in this work from her "Tourism" series. The images explore elements of longing and fantasy associated with advertising, fashion, film consumerism and travel, in this case. questioning the artificially contrived slickness of tourist images and the possibility of unprogrammed, unmediated experience. This work and body of work has been publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions, presented a major venues, and discussed in major art journals and daily press publications. |
