Summary
DescriptionLatua pubiflora ( Griseb. ) Baillon contrasting old and new flowers.jpg |
English: Contrast between old and new flowers on same plant of Latua pubiflora ( Solanaceae ). Senescent flower above has corolla and anthers turning tawny brown as they wither, ( though upper part of corolla and filaments still bright magenta). Full-blown, pristine flower below is, by contrast, uniformly magenta, apart from the fully-dehisced, exserted ( = protruding below corolla ) anthers with ash-grey pollen. Note also difference between respective calyces : calyx lobes of senescent flower starting to reflex after setting of fruit; while calyx of younger flower still accrescent and campanulate ( = bell-like ). |

Flowers borne by small, container-grown specimen purchased from specialist nursery in county of Herefordshire, United Kingdom. An attractive, though extremely poisonous plant used by the Machi ( shamans of the indigenous Mapuche or Araucanian people of its native Chile ) as a folk medicine, poison and ( delirient ) hallucinogen.
