Español: El cabildo catedralicio sevillano le encargó este cuadro a Goya en 1817, y por mediación de Agustín Ceán Bermúdez, que era un erudito y escritor de arte y amigo personal de Goya. El cuadro estaba destinado al altar de la Sacristía de los Cálices de la catedral de Sevilla, (España), donde aún permanece. Y conviene señalar que las santas alfareras, Justa y Rufina, que son las patronas de Sevilla, fueron martirizadas por haberse negado a adorar una imagen de la diosa Venus, y siempre suelen ser representadas junto a objetos de barro como símbolo de su profesión y con las palmas del martirio. En esta obra un león lame mansamente el pie de Santa Rufina, herido por haberla forzado a caminar desde la sierra hasta Sevilla, y esta ciudad aparece al fondo, destacándose la Torre de la Giralda de la catedral sevillana, que según la tradición quedó en pie por la intervención milagrosa de estas mártires durante el terremoto que asoló Sevilla en 1504.
