Description
Español: La obra representa a San Almáquio, que fue un mártir cristiano del siglo IV que quiso con su intercesión poner fin a las luchas de gladiadores que tenían lugar en el Anfiteatro Flavio, más conocido como Coliseo. La escena, situada en un Coliseo ya en ruinas, muestra la aparición del santo portando una cruz en torno al cual se agolpa la multitud, creando un avisión espectral de acentuado dramatismo. Su autor presentó el cuadro a la Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes de 1887, recibiendo una crítica adversa por ser calificado el cuadro de incomprensible, aunque obtuvo una medalla de primera clase y fue adquirido por el Estado espàñol.
