Description

English: "The little weaver" by Joan Planella and Rodríguez. Probably made in 1885 but dated in 1889, it is a replica of another original one from 1882, which received remarkable success and many awards. It belongs to Realism style. This second version is an oil on canvas with dimensions of 67x55cm.

The composition of the picture represents the child labor in Nineteenth Century textile factories in Catalonia. The painting was not intended to criticise child labor in the factories, rather to just reflect a daily scene.

This painting received the same warm welcome as the original, but the press of the time did not differentiate between them. In both, the artist achieved a balance between realism and feeling. This second version was in 1893 at the Chicago World's Fair, where it received a medal. Acquired then by the Fall Festivities Association of Saint Louis, joined the City Art Museum as part of the Washington University Collection. However, in 1945 the museum withdrew the painting and sold at public auction in New York. It is then entered into private hands, to be finally acquired by the Museu d'Història de Catalunya in December 2012, after public sale in Balclis auction house -with the registration number MHC4204.
