La plupart des rois de Porto-Novo ont habité ce palais car, à la différence des rois d'Abomey, ils ne marquaient pas leur règne par des constructions nouvelles. Abandonné en 1976 à la suite de querelles de succession, il a fait l'objet d'importants travaux de restauration et est ouvert au public depuis 1988, à l'exception d'une partie réservée aux descendants des chefs supérieurs. On ne parle plus en effet de rois, mais de " chefs supérieurs " depuis qu'avec la colonisation les rois de Porto-Novo ont été dépossédés de leur pouvoir politique. La résidence royale est implantée sur un site de 2,5 ha. Les bâtiments, construits pour la plupart au XIXe siècle, sont distribués autour de cinq cours, dont deux à impluvium, comme dans les palais d'Ifé et de Kétou, tandis qu'à l'extérieur se trouvent les temples et les autels célébrant la mémoire des ancêtres de la famille royale. La visite mérite un détour même si l'ancien Palais Royal présente moins d'intérêt que celui d'Abomey.
