Description 2007 photograph looking east at L'Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The L'Enfant Plaza Hotel is in the background. Two pedestrian entrances to the "La Promenade" shopping mall are just visible to the right and left in the image. The hotel was designed by Vlastimil Koubek, and opened in 1973. The Plaza, the North Building (just visible to the left), and the South Building (just visible to the right) were designed by I. M. Pei and his partners in the early 1960s; Pei's partner Araldo Cossutta designed the North and South Buildings. The glass pyramid, constructed in the 1980s, replaced a fountain designed by Pei and was intended to mimic Pei's famous glass pyramid at the Louvre in France. The pyramid was demolished when the plaza was renovated in 2013–2014.
