English: The photograph shows a section of one of Knaresborough Castle's secret underground military tunnels known as a Sallyport. Tunnels such as these were built to enable besieged castle garrisons to exit the castle in a stealthy manner to launch surprise attackers on besieging forces. This sallyport is the only one at Knaresborough that is actually accessible today.
