Summary

Description Drawing of the SE3 panel of the Kilnaruane pillar stone in Bantry, Co. Cork. The original relief from the 8th century depicts the so-called Bantry boat. It is a rare example of an expression of a pre-Viking skin-covered boat (currach) in Ireland. To be seen are four oarsmen and a helmsman at the steering oar. At the original pillar the relief is rotated by 90 degrees such that the boat steers toward heaven.

Source This drawing was created by me using Inkscape on base of this photograph. I loaded the photograph as background into Inkscape and attempted to create paths that follow the relief as close as I was able to track them. The raised form is in black, the sunken parts in white. The relief does not provide any details beyond these two levels. As the pillar stone is quite weathered and the photograph was taken under less than optimal lighting conditions, this drawing is far from being perfect.
