In the foreground is what appears to be the remnants of a staircase (it was still climbable, with care), ascending from the lower left corner of the photo towards the two recesses; these recesses date from the attempted remodelling of the castle (I'm not sure what they were intended for, aside from decoration; they seem rather small for statue alcoves).
Note the opening on the right-hand side of the staircase, also shown at 1594755.
