Summary
DescriptionKilkiffeth Farm entrance - geograph.org.uk - 455274.jpg |
English: Kilkiffeth Farm entrance. The old milk churn stand has been nicely utilised for the benefit of visitors who can camp here. Kilkiffeth is the English spelling of a very old and important mansion about which the local historian Richard Fenton wrote in 1811: "Cilyceithed, the ancient residence of David Ddu, of the Black (whose descendants for centuries were the first men in that county), falling among three co-heiresses in the time of Charles I, was deserted for the seats of the gentlemen on whom they had bestowed their lands and fortune. The possessors of this house were the kings of the mountains and stretched their sway far and wide. Their mansion, as the tradition is, as every way commensurate with their extensive property, command and hospitality; and though at the removal of the heiresses, the fabric was suffered to be dilapidated; amongst the ruins, from time to time, have been discovered much cut stone, vaults, and other relics indicatory of a style of magnificence not common in this country at that period." – The old dwelling has been replaced by a working farm, itself C17, but there are still a few signs the former grandeur remaining. |
