Summary
DescriptionKettlethorpe, Ss Peter & Paul church (24906333284).jpg |
Grade II listed The village of Kettlethorpe dates from the 9th century. In 1356 the Manor of Kettlethorpe was taken over by Sir Thomas Swynford. His son married Katherine Roelt who later married John of Gaunt, having been his mistress for some 20 years. The original church dates from the 15th century, but was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. Nothing of the original church remains. There is a western tower, nave with north aisle, chancel, and vestry. The unbuttressed three stage tower dates from the 15th century, but was rebuilt in 1809 using the original stones. The entrance porch to the church is in its base. The nave was also rebuilt in 1809 in yellow Brick, and the north aisle, which was added in 1864, is separated by two iron supports. There are two stained-glass windows in the north wall. Some of the original mediaeval stained glass was transferred to Messingham. The nave walls have 19th century texts painted around the top. The chancel arch is 19th century, and in the chancel there is a reset 15th century corbel of an Angel and Shield bearing the Royal Arms. The east window was added in 1874. Most of the interior is quite bare, with 19th century fittings, however the pulpit is from the 17th century and said to come from Brittany. It has carvings with scenes from the life of Christ. There are several monuments consisting of wall plaques in the church, dating back to 1597. There is a small late 19th century organ by Cousans. The churchyard contains a cross, originally from the 14th century, but the top is 19th century. |
