Description

Painting by Katharine Kuharic, Mister Rogers (oil on linen, 40" x 60", 1996). The image illustrates a key earlier body of work in Katharine Kuharic's paintings in the 1990s, when she focused on personal, sometimes macabre, imagery of the body, symbolic objects and female figures, occasionally configured in timelines representing sexual partners or in fraught scenarios or guises alongside iconic figures of femininity. In this case, a central young woman covered with tattoos is encircled by a second figure rendered in cutaways of tissue, bones and entrails and surrounded by small female figures: a debutante, a dominatrix, nuns and Eastern religious devotees, and a trapeze artist among them. This work was publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key earlier body of work in Katharine Kuharic's career in the 1990s: her paintings focused on personal, sometimes macabre, imagery of the body, symbolic objects and female figures, who were occasionally configured in timelines representing sexual partners. These minutely detailed works sometimes featured women with flayed or heavily tattooed flesh, in fraught scenarios or guises, that were placed alongside iconic figures of femininity or in Utopian worlds of women. Critics have sometimes described these theatrical tableaux as having the heightened quality of opera, or as surreal. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this early stage and body of work, which brought Kuharic initial recognition through exhibitions and coverage by major critics and publications. Kuharic's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Katharine Kuharic, and the work no longer is viewable, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
