Summary
[edit]I myself made this digital photograph of three very old prints which were posted from Ballarat to Tregaron, Wales, in March 1871. No copyright can apply after 136 years to the work of deceased original photographer J H Roberts (whose name is printed on the back of each photo). The provenance is established by the diary of the subject, Joseph Jenkins, for March, 1871. The original prints are possessed by Mrs Mair Owen of Penbryn, Bronant who made them available to me in person. Two of them have been reproduced in the book Pity the Swagman by Dr Bethan Phillips. In these circumstances I have no hesitation in making the uploaded material public subject to attribution in the terms "Photo by courtesy of Mrs Mair Owen and Brian Jenkins".
