Description

Screen capture from A Shower of Stars depicting Jo Stafford and her husband, Paul Weston, performing as Jonathan and Darlene Edwards. The Edwardses were a fictional couple created by Stafford and Weston as a comedy music act. As Jonathan, Weston plays a very bad lounge piano while Stafford as Darlene, provides vocals in every key except the right one. The couple produced at least five record albums as the imaginary couple. Jonathan and Darlene Edwards in Paris won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 1961.

Jack Benny was the headliner for this January 9, 1958 television special. The plot ran that he had written a song and with the help of Ed Wynn, was trying to get singers to record it. Benny tried guest star Tommy Sands with no luck, then began his pitch to Jo Stafford and Paul Weston, who also were guests.

The Westons didn't want to record the song, but didn't want to hurt Benny's feelings by refusing to, so they decided to "pass" the song to Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, who then demonstrated their "skills" by performing "All the Way" as a proposed "B" side of the single.

  • The show aired in 1958; by this time, all major television programs were likely to be under copyright, so the assumption is that this episode was under copyright as of 1958.
  • A title search for "Shower of Stars" was done at copyright.gov, to look for any possible renewal. Three titles turned up in the search-none of them pertain to the 1958 Chrysler sponsored television show. On this basis, there's no evidence that any copyright which may have existed, was renewed, so no claim was found for this material.
