Summary
[edit]Description | Picture of Faith Ringgold's quilt painting The American Collection #4: Jo Baker's Bananas (1997) at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., in 2023. A large figurative painting contained within an elaborately patterned fabric quilt. The painting depicts a group of people standing in front of a large painting of the performer Josephine Baker. Baker is depicted 5 times in different dancing positions, wearing her signature performance outfit of no clothing apart from a skirt made of bananas and a layered necklace. Several museum or gallery patrons are having drinks in front of the painting, while two jazz musicians perform on both sides of the scene. Extensive hand-painted patterns contained in dozens of gridded triangles serve as the background in the painting. |
