詹天佑(1861–1919),中國近代科学技术界的先驱,杰出的铁路工程专家。12岁时被选为第一批留美幼童出国学习。1881年毕业于美国耶鲁大学土木工程系。历任晚清时期中国铁路公司工程师、京张铁路总办兼总工程师、民国时期交通部总长等职务。1905年主持修建中國历史上第一条干线铁路——京张铁路,开创了中国人民依靠自己的智慧和力量修建铁路的先河,被誉为“中国铁路之父”。周恩来总理曾高度评价他是“中国人的光荣”。值此京张铁路肇建百年之际,立此铜像,以为纪念。
