Author RCA Records

Can be dated by historic Jefferson Airplane/RCA Records events.

  • RCA began retiring Nipper and the "lightning bolt" logo in late 1968. The ligntning bolt logo was replaced by a block-lettered RCA logo for the rest of the 1960's and 1970s. The Nipper dog logo made a return in 1976.
  • Spencer Dryden left the band in early 1970; he returned for publicity purposes for the group's Flight Log compliation album in 1977. File:Jefferson airplane 1977.JPG. Members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen begin drifting away from the band into Hot Tuna circa 1969. By 1971, the group makes a deal for its own label to be distributed by RCA called Grunt Records. Later efforts of the Airplane and after that, Jefferson Starship, are on the Grunt label, with publicity material and ads mentioning Grunt.
  • By 1974, the group had evolved into Jefferson Starship, which did not include Dryden, Casady or Kaukonen. Its new releases were issued under the Jefferson Starship band title. Casady and Kaukonen, like Dryden mentioned above, returned for publicity of the Flight Log 1977 compilation album. For various reasons, the group of band members in the photo never performed together after circa 1970-(Dryden's leaving). While they did perform as Jefferson Airplane at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1996, lead singer Grace Slick was absent due to illness.
