sner, then Captain, for each of the fol-lowing acts of heroism in action:On May 30, 1918, he attacked two enemy planes atan altitude of 4500 meters, and after a sharp en-gagement shot one down in flames and forced theother back into its own territory. One of his wingswas again torn as before, but he was able to landsafely on the home field. His third victory was incombat with a Boche Observation Plane over Eply,June 5th. This after a long chase. His fourth vic-tory was in combat with another Boche ObservationPlane, June 13th, over Thiacourt.July 24th he was assigned to command the 147thAero Scfuadron (this when he was 21 years old).August 1st, aided by Lieutenant Brotherton, in afight against six Fokker Scouts, he won his fifth vic-tory. During the St. Mihiel Drive and the ArgonneDrive, he operated from the Rembercourt Field, do-ing low patrols from 100 to 1500 feet high and spe-cializing in attacks on enemy observation balloons atdawn and sunset.
