Giese (1480–1550), Bischhof von Kulm und Ermland, war ein Freund des Astronomen Nikolaus Kopernikus. Der Bedeutungsgehalt des Reliefs geht über die Vantassymbolik hinaus und ist im Zusammenhang mit vorreformatorischen humanistischen Ideen zu sehen.
