Description |
Still image Jo Ann Gillerman in live performance of Whispers in a Plane of Light, on a Sandin video image processor/synthesizer at Digicon '83, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, 1983. The image illustrates a major body of work in JoAnn Gillerman's career from the latter 1970s and 1980s, when she produced experimental new media works combining collaborative live performance, music, and synthetically-generated imagery. This image depicts Gillerman in a live collaboration coordinated in real time in which each performer controlled the output (projected visuals or sound) of the other, producing a kaleidoscopic array of forms including computer graphics, symbolic imagery live to create a study of gender, relationships, reality and fantasy in flux. These performances and new media works were publicly performed or exhibited in prominent alternative venues and conferences and discussed in major art journals and press publications. |

Low resolution? |
Yes. The image will not affect the commercial value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
Purpose of use |
The image has contextual significance, serving an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key body of work in JoAnn Gillerman's career during the latter 1970s and 1980s: her early new media works, which were experimental combinations of collaborative live performance of music and synthetically-generated visuals. In these works, she used an image processor to manipulate video signals, performing live visuals in conjunction with improvised electronic music in shows exploring sensory perception and relationships between the two art forms. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this foundational body of work and medium, which brought Gillerman early recognition through performances and exhibitions in major venues, computer conferences and alternative spaces as well as coverage by major critics and publications. Gillerman's work of this type and this series, as well as this specific work, are discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by JoAnn Gillerman, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
