Summary
DescriptionIron fireman.jpg |
Iron Fireman snow tractor The image at the top of the page is the official one from the ORD-8 Parts List, TM 9-761, a larger version of this image is on the page linked below. ( Note that this TM 9 number was reused later for another item - thanks to Dennis Spence for that detail ) In the larger version, manual and electric wipers, rear view mirror, and fire extinguisher mount can all be seen. The hex nuts visible front and midpoint on the lower cab are the caps covering the ends of the crosstubes that mount the cab. The big bolt visible just in front of the rear drive sprocket is the main cross tube about which the track frames pivot. Track frame articulation is limited, but there are a pair of sliding stops and a transverse leaf spring mounted directly between the fuel tanks. The left hand fuel tank is visible at the front of the track frame, just behind the front idler. Left and right tanks are linked, but can be isolated. Fuel tank sender unit on right hand tank only. Immediately behind the fuel tank the box structure is the battery box, which has a standoff floor to allow heating for arctic service. Heating was by engine heating furnace & flue as used on Allis Chalmers T26E4 / M7 Snow tractor, and heating included engine, battery box, cab, and apparently both fuel tanks. The exhaust output and silencer occupies the space on the right track frame that the battery box does on the left frame. Braden winch fitted under drivers seat and driven by a shaft that is chain driven from PTO on right hand side of transmission. WInch type is Braden M2, basically the same as the MU2 found on the T214 Dodge series but mounted differently - not Underslung, so M2 rather than MU2. Pioneer tool rack across back of cab internally behind rear seat back. Radio ariel base mount at top of pillar immediately in front of right cab door. Roof of survivor has a rectangular panel in the centre with factory rivet type, but suggesting original design included a roof hatch. Tracks are 24" wide conveyor belt, 6-ply, 27 foot long, joined, with bolt-through metal grousers at 12" pitch on alternate edges and drive lugs at 3" pitch. Dodge T214 engine, same as any 3/4 ton Dodge WC. Survivor engine serial number places the engine block and cylinder head June / July 1944, though the transmission is dated 1943. Engine accessories are standard, apart from a later replacement carburettor and electrical sender for oil pressure. Oil pressure sender and gauge are standard G-104 Sherman tank items. Correct carburettor should be Carter version of T214 unit.
One at the Miracle of America Museum, Polson, Montana, part restored. One in central Scotland, under restoration. One in Wisconsin, owner unknown
