Description These columns from the first floor of the Ducal Palace of Evoramonte are topped with a "garter and buckle" design representing the Order of the Garter, the highest level of knighthood in the order of chivalry established in England in 1348. The fact that it is also used in Portugal reflects the deep bonds between the two countries that began during the reconquest of Portugal from the Moors and continues to this day.
