Summary
DescriptionInterior, Duncan House, Polymath Park, Acme, PA.jpg |
English: Built in 1954 in Lisle, Illinois, this Modern Usonian-style prefabricated house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and constructed for the Duncan family, with the house remaining in the Duncan family until 2002. The house was dismantled in 2004 due to the redevelopment of the land upon which it originally stood, with each piece of the house being carefully catalogued before disassembly. The house remained in storage until 2007, when it was reconstructed at Polymath Park in Acme, Pennsylvania. The house features masonite siding painted yellow with horizontal red trim bands, narrow ribbon windows on the front of the house, gabled roofs with wide overhanging eaves, a cantilevered low-slope roof at the entrance and carport, stone wall cladding and a stone base at the outdoor storage shed on the far side of the carport from the house, and a stone chimney, which were the original design intent but not executed in the original construction due to cost, with the house instead originally featuring concrete block where stone is present today, large windows opening onto a rear terrace, and horizontal bands in the stone cladding. The interior features a 1950s kitchen with laminate countertops and oak cabinets, linoleum flooring, wooden walls with horizontal trim pieces, accordion doors, vaulted ceilings, built-in wooden cabinets, and 1950s bathroom fixtures. The house today is open to public tours and overnight stays, which helps support the preservation of several notable pieces of Organic Modern architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright and those who had previously worked for him. |
