The inscription reads:
SIXTUS V PONT MAX
COLUMNAM HANC
COCHLIDEM IMP
ANTONINO DICATAM
MISERE LACERAM
RUINOSAMQ PRIMAE
FORMAE RESTITUIT
A M D LXXXIX PONT IV
Which translates as:
"Pope Sixtus the fifth has rebuilt this unfortunate mutilated and dilapidated column, dedicated to emperor Antoninus, in its original form, in the year 1589, the fourth year of his pontificate."
