He then traveled along the west side of theSabine to Burrs ferry, crossed the river there andcame down the east bank to Orange, penetratingthrough the finest belt of long-leaf pine timberthat he had ever seen. He and his partner atonce invested largely in these lands and put up amammoth saw-mill at Orange. In 1889 they alsobuilt at Lutcher, La., one of the largest and bestappointed saw-mills in the United States. Sevenhundred and fifty thousand dollars were expendedon this mill before it paid them a dollar. The twomills cut 200,000 feet of logs a day and average anoutput of sixty million feet of lumber annually,which meets with a ready sale. These invest-ments have increased in value until Mr. Lutcheris now several times a millionaire.
