Description

Washington D.C. Jan. 18, 2021. — Washington D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee addresses the crowd before Chief Deputy Lamont Ruffin from D.C. District Court swears in 1657 law enforcement officers from across the country as Special Deputy U.S. Marshals prior to the upcoming presidential inauguration. Deputation gives the officers temporary, limited, local law enforcement authority pertaining specifically to the safety and protection of the inauguration and related events. The swearing in took place at a D.C. hotel and involved officers from 40 different police departments.

Mass swearing ins like this take place before every presidential inauguration to increase the law enforcement presence in the capital for the safety of all involved as well as spectators.
