"Established in 1911 as the first western-style theatre in Japan, the Imperial Theatre is located in the centre of Tokyo, close to the Imperial Palace and Marunouchi, the major business area of the city. When it originally opened the venue had a great impact on the Japanese theatrical scene, inaugurating a completely new type of theatrical activity. After two and a half years of refurbishment it re-opened in 1966 and has since regularly hosted large-scale musical productions such as Miss Saigon and Les Misérables. It remains one of the most important large-scale theatres in the country."
