Summary

Description

Thank you for the help you've already given to victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Sadly, the animals and their caregivers of the Gulf Coast region continue to need your support and contributions...

North Shore Animal League America dispatched three units of their Emergency Response Team to damaged or destroyed shelters in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama. The league rescued over 165 animals and transported them back to the safety of their facility in Port Washington, NY.

Twenty-one animals were found at a decimated shelter in South Mississippi. This Gulf Port facility was completely destroyed and yet these brave animals managed to swim in their cages for over seven hours to stay alive. Since their harrowing experience, all have been adopted into loving homes. Please consider a contribution to NSALA to aid their efforts: www.nsalamerica.org/feature/katrina/ars.html.

The Disaster Animal Response Teams of the Humane Society of the United States continue to work against the clock in an all-out effort to save the animals left stranded by the hurricane. Together, over 300 of their staff, the Louisiana SPCA and other organizations have rescued nearly 5,000 animals. Most are cats and dogs, but nearly 2,000 are other pets and wildlife, and 121 are horses.

HSUS teams utilizing rescue vehicles, including the 38-foot Disaster Response Unit, have rescued animals from rooftops, trees, and other dangerous circumstances. Rescuers are breaking down doors to enter homes of desperate pet owners and facing floods and flames to bring these animals to safety. Petfinder.com has collaborated on the new Animal Emergency Response Network, to help companion animal victims and their caretakers during disasters. This comprehensive database links information from the public and emergency response organizations and makes it available to rescuers, victims, and volunteers.

The database allows displaced hurricane victims to post the locations of their pets so that rescuers can locate and save them. Rescuers can post the descriptions and photos of animals they find, increasing the chances of reunion. Lastly, volunteers post their offers of foster care for displaced pets. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to help rescued animals!

Sincerely,
