Summary

Description

c/n 891311. The DB-3 first flew in 1935 and remained in service until replaced by the Il-4, which was actually a redesigned DB-3 officially designated the DB-3F. See here for the sole surviving Il-4 :- www.flickr.com/photos/ajw1970/37844894155/ But I digress….. The DB-3 served as a long-range bomber and in August 1941 the type carried out the first Soviet bombing of Berlin. They saw action during the ‘Winter War’ with Finland and a few captured examples saw both Finnish and German service. This is the only surviving example and was recovered in September 1988 from taiga forests about 75miles from Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Restored at the Irkutsk Aircraft Industrial Association factory, it was delivered to Monino by an An-22 and was handed over to the museum in December 1989. After a few years outside, it is now safely on display in the new Hangar 6B which has been built behind the main entrance building. At the time of our visit the hangar had not been officially opened to the public, but we were given special permission to access it from Hangar 6A. Central Air Force museum, Monino, Moscow Oblast, Russia.
