Summary

Description
English: USGS caption: "I.C. Russell leading a U.S. Geological Survey party across the moraines of the Malaspina Glacier. Yakutat district, Alaska Gulf region, Alaska. c. 1890. Upper photograph page 25, Images of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1879-1979." Five men in outdoor clothing, with backpacks and walking staffs, standing and sitting on rocky ground. The caption identifies this as the moraine of Malaspina Glacier. This is on the party's route to Mount St Elias. The USGS description on the website does not identify the men, nor does the 1979 publication it cites. Russell is possibly the one standing on rocks in the middle, looking off into the distance. (This is not a sure identification; Sylvestre [1] has Russell on the far right but provides no source or explanation for the identification.) Besides the dynamic pose and the resemblance to other photos of Russell (prominent brows, eyes set wide and deep, shape of nose, jutting chin; unfortunately the forehead and ears are hidden), the standing man is wearing a souwester (hat). Russell wrote that this proved to be the most practical headgear on this trip, but none of the others is wearing one. Note the rope pack-straps which Russell also described.
