Summary
[edit]Description | Picture of Melesio "Mel" Casas' painting Humanscape 62 (1970) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2023. A figurative painting depicting, from left to right: a Native American man wearing a white headband and red shawl; the brand mascot Frito Bandito rendered in jade green atop a stereotypically MesoAmerican skeleton figure, flanked by two jade serpents; a young white Girl Scout or Brownie; and several brown-skinned figures wearing shawls, a distance away from the other figures. All the figures are set against a blue background with a very large depiction of a stack of chocolate brownies that takes up most of the frame. The bottom of the painting contains a line of text rendered in black against a white background that reads, in all caps, "Brownies of the Southwest." |
