Hotel Windermere East in Chicago (1923). It was designed by the Rapp and Rapp firm, who mostly designed theaters and film-related buildings. It became famous for its elegance, and wealthy residents of Hyde Park would travel there for an English-style breakfast. It was the hotel of choice for those visiting the University of Chicago or the Museum of Science and Industry. The Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams called the hotel home when they were in town to play the Bears or Cardinals. The construction of Midway Airport greatly reduced the demand for lakefront hotels, and the hotel struggled in the following decades. It was eventually purchased by the university to prevent its dilapidation. It was sold to a private group in 1980, who restored it.
