Summary

Description

The reverse side of Francis Hopkinson's design for the Great Seal of the United States, done as part of the second committee (of three) to attempt a design (which was unsuccessful).

Hopkinson's description was:

Liberty is seated in a chair holding an olive branch and her staff is topped by a Liberty cap. The motto `Virtute perennis' means `Everlasting because of virtue.' The date in Roman numerals is 1776.

This was a very slight modification of a design made by Hopkinson a few days previously.
