Text Appearing After Image: Home Office Building of the Adas Assurance Company. Assurance Company of London wasprojected by merchants and bankerstowards the close of 1807, at WillsCoffee House in Cheapside. The Atlasopened its office for business on Mid-summer Day, 1808. Six weeks later thefirst loss occurred. The amount claimedwas paid in full. The Sun of April 12, 1808, con-tained an advertisement of the closeof the Atlas subscription. It was an-nounced that the office would be opened Reference was made to the respecta-bility, capital, and connexions of thepresent share-holders. The Atlas was the first London insur-ance company to own its house.The site at the corner of King street andCheapside was purchased, and at thiscorner the Atlas has made its homeever since. Windows were taxed then,and we read with interest that the com-pany paid taxes on thirty-six windows.The directors believed in light.
