To the Glory of God and in proud and loving memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918   RUSHTON, Arthur, Sergeant 6798, 1st North Staffordshire Regiment, killed in action 23rd May 1915 aged 35. He was the son of Arthur and Martha of Hollington. The 1911 census have his mother widowed and residing at Quarry Road, Hollington. Arthur was living with his wife, Rose at 4 Mopsey Square, Normanton, Yorkshire, working at a colliery in 1911. He is buried in Ferme Buterne Military Cemetery, Houplines, France.   BELFIELD, Arthur Richard, Private 33289, 3rd Field Ambulance, Canadian Army Medical Corps, born 15th June 1894 and died 26th September 1916. Buried in Albert Communal Cemetery, Extension, Somme, France   WARING, A, Able Seaman (He is not listed with the CWGC) It may be the following person, Able Seaman K7952 Arthur WARING. Born 24th January 1890 at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire (Source, The National Archives). 1911 shows him as Stoker on Ship, Wolverine, anchored at Harwich and home address as Hollington, Staffordshire. In the 1891 census it shows Arthur aged given as 3. living with his widowed mother Annie née Goodall. at Bottom End, Hollington. His late father Francis Samuel died at Hollington 9th May 1890. His birth was registered in Cheadle Staffordshire in 1888

HODKINSON, John Edwin, Private 23010, 7th North Staffordshire Regiment, killed in action in the field at Mesopotamia on the 12th January 1917 aged 35. He was the son of William and Sarah Ellen of Summer Hill, Hollington, Staffordshire. Buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq   TABBERNOR, William George, Sergeant 390169 London Regiment, Born 28th December 1887 and died at home 22nd August 1917. Native of Ealing. He was the son of William and Emma and husband of Amy Rebecca of 57, Eaton Rise, Ealing, Middlesex. Buried in Hanwell Cemetery, Middlesex.   JOHNSON, Frederick Reginald, Private 62889, 57th Coy, Machine Gun Corps, (Infantry) Formerly Private 2278, London Regiment D.C.M. died 21st September 1917 aged 24. He was the only son of Arthur and Louisa Johnson of 99, Elm Park Road, Reading. London Gazette dated 26th January 1918. Entry for his D.C.M. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The whole of his team except himself and one other man were put out of action by enemy barrage. The gun was most important position and completely isolated from the infantry for an hour, in answer to an S.O.S., signal, throughout the most intensive bombardment of gas and high explosive shells. His courage, resource and very gallant conduct proved of great value at a critical time.   AMOS, John William, Lance Corporal 96003, 10th Sherwood Foresters, died 21st March 1918 aged 22. He was the son of Arthur James and Isabella. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.   GUNTRIPP, Wilfred Frank, Corporal 39185, 61st Machine Gun Corps, (Infantry), formerly 12784, Sherwood Foresters. He died 21st March 1918 and was the son of William and Jane who in 1901 were residing in Creighton Street, Hollington and 1919 at Stramshall, near Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France Some notes from his army record (Burnt Documents) The movement dates on his records are a little out of order, there may be records not belonging to him which have been accidentally included. He joined up on the 19th August 1914 at Derby, and joined the Sherwood Foresters as Private 12785. He gave his occupation as a farm labourer Whilst with the Sherwood Foresters He was at the Depot on the 19th August 1914 16th April 1915 appointed unpaid Lance Corporal 14th November 1915 Posted to the Expeditionary Force 8th January 1916. He was deprived of his Lance Stripe for "Neglect of duty when in charge of a tent" According to his records he was in hospital in Manchester England 3rd March 1916 he was transferred to 33rd Brigade, Machine Gun Company 18th November 1917 he was promoted to Corporal His records show that he was wounded twice. On the 14th August 1915 he received a gunshot wound to his left arm in Gallipoli and was admitted to 14, Casualty Clearing Station. He was invalided to England and admitted to 2nd, Western General Hospital Manchester. He was discharged and he embarked from Liverpool on the 14th November 1916 to rejoin Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF) in Gallipoli He was wounded again on the 17th January 1917 in his left leg and taken to 30th Field Ambulance. On the 19th admitted to 8th R G Hospital, Le Touquet and transferred to Brighton, England on Hospital Ship 31st January 1917 and was discharged to unit on the 25th February 1917 His brother James Albert in 1919 was stationed at Tidworth Barracks. He was Private 11858, 14th Hussars   BURTON, Edwin, Private 202422, 2/4th Dorsetshire Regiment, formerly 4094 Wiltshire Regiment died 9th April 1918 aged 32. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah of 47, Eastfield Road, Andover, Hampshire. Buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel   DEACON, Ernest Cecil Watson, 2nd Lieutenant, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry attached to 27th Squadron, Royal Air Force, died 22nd April 1918 aged 19. He was the son of The Reverend Ernest and Gertrude of Croxden Vicarage, Croxden, Staffordshire. His medals were issued by the Air Ministry. He is buried in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France   PEACH, John William, Private 203536, 1/4th York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 5712, 5th Northumberland Fusiliers. died 29th April 1918 aged 36. He was the son of Philip and Ann of Quarry Bank, Hollington. Buried in Arneke British Cemetery, France Some notes from his Army record He joined up on the 22nd March 1916 at Lichfield, Staffordshire, gave is aged as 33yrs and 5 months and occupation as quarryman His movement. At the depot (Home) from the 22nd March 1916 to 6th July 1916 With the British Expeditionary Force from the 7th July 1916 to 29th April 1918 9th September 1916 he transferred the 1/4th York and Lancs Regiment On the 29th April 1918 he received gunshot wounds to the head, abdomen and back and was admitted to 44th Casualty Clearing Station, France where he died. (Going by the injuries it appears that he was caught up in machine gun fire.)

HEATON, J. C., Private, died 26th June 1918. It has been established that the surname is incorrect it should be EATON. John Charles EATON was born in the registration district of Cheadle Staffordshire in 1891 and was the son of Joseph and Rebecca of Hollington. He served as Private 50379, Canadian Army Medical Corps on Hospital Ship, Llandovery Castle when on the 27th June 1918 the ship was torpedoed West of Fastnet Rock by U-Boat86. He was awarded the Military Medal. he is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial, Nova Scotia, Canada   BURTON, Herbert, Gunner 476780, Canadian Field Artillery. He was born 26th February 1887 and died 22nd January 1919 aged 31. He was the son of John and Selina of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire and in 1901 he was residing with his widowed mother and siblings at High Farm, Beamhurst, Staffordshire. He is buried in the Military Plot at Nelson Memorial Park, British Columbia, Canada
