[edit]Description |
Oil on board painting of a Cornish river scene by British painter Hilda Annetta Walker (1877-1960). The location of the view is likely to be a view across the River Fowey, from Fowey towards Bodinnick, Cornwall, England. Walker was painting in Cornwall in 1912. Showing a detail of the painting with trees and buildings. Variation of colour, from contrasting or dissonant areas of the spectrum, is used on the trees for 3D effect. The buildings may appear a little boxy and naïve in quality, but it is worth comparing these houses with the domestic architecture of Walker's home town of Mirfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire, where it was grey stone or red brick, and all smoke-blackened in the early 20th century. So these houses may represent the way in which Walker viewed them as an outsider. She is perhaps emphasizing difference. | |||||
