English: A notice indicates this mosque was built for Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839) in 1813 in wood. It fell into disrepair and was rebuilt under Sultan Abdulhamid II (1876-1909) in 1887, in its present form. Architect Alexsandre Vallaury, a Frenchman, designed is. It has two floors and is almost square. It is curious in that the two floors, though probably providing lots of prayer space on small grounds, gave me the feeling of being boxed in, as is the mihrab (prayer niche), when seen from the upper floor.
