Description

Religious emotional experience is an important aspect of Carracci's work. Depicted here, for the first time in art, is the Virgin appearing to Saint Francis, who receives the Christ Child from her. Carracci created a stark contrast between the heavenly light around the Virgin and the nocturnal darkness, thus emphasizing the intensely spiritual nature of Saint Francis's vision
