Description
Deutsch: Zam, Herzel Jankel, wahrscheinlich einziger jüdischer Offizier im Russischen Reich des 19. Jahrhunderts. Im Alter von 17 Jahren trat er als Kantonist in die Kaiserlich Russische Armee ein. Nach einer Dienstzeit von 41 Jahren avancierte er zum Hauptmann. Trotz erheblicher Einflussnahme von außen konvertierte er nie zur Staatsreligion des Russisch-Orthodoxen Christentums.
English: Herzel Yankel Tsam, the only Jewish officer in the 19th century Russian Empire. Drafted into the army as a 17-year-old сantonist, he was pomoted to captain only after 41 years of service. In spite of pressures, he never converted to Christianity.
