English: Angel kneeling on the corner of the sarcophagus of Bishop Henry Yates Satterlee in the Bethlehem Chapel on the crypt level of the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Satterlee was the first Episcopal Bishop of Washington, D.C. He was 53 years when consecrated bishop in 1896. It was that same year that Charles Carroll Glover, a D.C. banker, gathered a number of prominent businessmen, clergy, and citizens of the city together at his home at 734 Lafayette Square and organized a group to build a grand nondenominational Christian cathedral in the city. It was Satterlee who demanded that the cathedral be Gothic in nature, who acquired the land atop Mt. Saint Alban, who oversaw the architectural design of the cathedral, and who laid its cornerstone on September 29, 1907. Satterlee died on February 22, 1908 -- having seen no construction start on his cathedral at all.
Architect Henry Vaughn oversaw the design of the Bethlehem Chapel, which is in the Norman style (although certain elements, such as the windows and arches, are French Gothic in style in order to meld the chapel with the surrounding English Gothic style of the rest of the cathedral).
Satterlee's tomb is made of pure alabaster, the only such object made of alabaster in the cathedral. It was designed and carved by W. Douglas Caroe, the resident architect at Canterbury Cathedral in England.
