Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. Metalpoint and black and coloured chalks on pink-primed paper, 19.1 × 14.4 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.

Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (1517–47), was a poet and art lover who enjoyed sitting for portraits: two drawings of him by Hans Holbein the Younger survive, as well as an oil portrait. Though this drawing has survived with a collection of drawings mainly by Holbein at Windsor, it is not regarded as a Holbein, on grounds of style. It could, however, be a free copy of Holbein's painting of Howard, in which the hat and ear are similarly placed, or of a version of it. Howard was executed in 1547, convicted of inappropriately using the Royal Arms of England. The arms are seen in a portrait of him by William Scrots. Reference
