Summary

Description
English: page from Henric van Cuyck, Bishop of Roermond (1546–1609) "Panegyricae orationes septem", Philippus Zangrius, Louvain, 1596. Collection of seven essays by the Bishop of Roermond in the Netherlands, including one defending the need for censorship of the press. Van Cuyck praised the essential role of writing within the history of Christian learning, but argued that the invention of printing by w:Johannes Gutenberg had resulted in a world infected by “pernicious lies.” Van Cuyck particularly singles out the writings of w:Martin Luther and w:Jean Calvin, the w:Talmud, and the w:Qu’ran, as well as w:Erasmus of Rotterdam. Van Cuyck also lamented that “prohibited” books were what printers and booksellers profited from most.
